Voici une bouteille un peu moderne pour mon blog, puisqu’elle date de la fin du 19^ème siècle, sans doute vers 1880. Il s’agit d’une bouteille de Coca Mariani, une boisson tonique inventée vers 1863 par Angelo Mariani, un chimiste et pharmacien corse, et composée de vin de Bordeaux et d’extrait de feuilles de coca – ce qui lui donnait, paraît-il, 6 à 7 mg de cocaïne par bouteille. Cette boisson fortifiante connut un grand succès avant d’être interdite en 1910, quelques années avant l’absinthe (1914-15). Le vin Mariani est parfois considéré comme l’ancêtre du Coca-Cola.

Here is a somewhat “modern” bottle for my blog, as it dates from the late 19^thC., probably around 1880. It is a bottle of Coca Mariani, a tonic drink invented in 1863 by Angelo Mariani, a Corsican chemist and pharmacist and composed of Bordeaux wine and extract of coca leaves. The Mariani wine thus contained about 6-7 mg of cocaine per bottle and was a great commercial success. The fortifying drink was however banned in 1910, few years before wormwood (1914-1915). The Mariani wine is sometimes regarded as the ancestor of the American Coca-Cola.

La bouteille elle-même est une bouteille de 22,5 cm de haut, moulée en 3 pièces, en verre vert olive, et très lourde : 740 grammes pour une contenance de 50cl – par comparaison, la dernière bouteille que j’ai postée, portant le sceau des Orléans, ne pèse que 825 grammes pour une contenance de 91 cl. Les sutures des 3 pièces sont fort apparentes. Le col est légèrement torsadé et s’achève en une bague de col fort proche de celle des bouteilles anglaises de la 2^ème moitié du 19^ème. Un tiers de la bouteille porte l’inscription « Coca Mariani Paris » en deux lignes; l’autre tiers est vierge et le fût comporte une fond très épais et assymétrique, avec une nette surépaisseur de verre d’un côté. La piqûre est relativement complexe et inscrite « Coca Mariani Paris France » avec un « E » sur le bouton central.

The bottle itself is 22.5 cm tall, blown in a 3-pieces mold, made of olive green glass and rather heavy, weighing no less than 740 grams for a capacity of 50cl. By comparison, the last bottle I posted, with the Orleans seal, weighs only 825 grams for a capacity of 91 cl. The sutures of the 3 pieces are very apparent. The neck is slightly twisted and ends in a string rim very close to that of English bottles from the 2^nd half of the 19^thC. One third of the bottle bears the inscription « Coca Mariani Paris » in two lines; the other third is plain and the body has a very thick and asymmetrical bottom, with an excess of glass to one side (hence the weight). The machine-tooled push-up is relatively complex and reads « Coca Mariani Paris France » with an « E » on the central button.

Bien qu’il s’agisse d’une bouteille industrielle, elle présente un côté assez rustique et est très lourde, avec des surépaisseurs de matière qui témoignent d’une fabrication relativement artisanale.

Although an industrial bottle, it has a rough finish and is very heavy with irregularities in the glass distribution reflecting a relatively artisanal manufacturing.
